West Side Story: A Note From the Director

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF WEST SIDE STORY

Puerto Rico, you lovely island…

Bringing West Side Story to life is no small task. It’s a show that demands everything; powerful vocals, precise choreography, emotional vulnerability, and seamless technical execution. What you’ll see on this stage tonight is the result of months of tireless effort from an extraordinary team of young performers and passionate professionals.

Our cast has taken on this iconic material with remarkable maturity, energy, and commitment. Every moment – from the explosive dance numbers to the quietest, most intimate scenes – has been crafted with intention and heart. They’ve pushed themselves artistically and grown tremendously along the way.

None of this would be possible without our incredible production team, who have poured their expertise and vision into every detail, and our outstanding technical crew, whose behind-the-scenes work brings the world of the show to life in powerful, often invisible ways. Lighting, sound, costumes, sets, stage management – each element plays a vital role, and each one is executed at the highest level.

On a personal note, West Side Story has always resonated deeply with me. As a Black woman, I see in this story a reflection of the complexities of identity, the cost of prejudice, and the deep yearning for belonging. The tension between cultures, the struggle to be seen and valued, and the hope for love and connection despite division – these are not just themes of a distant era; they are lived experiences for many, including myself. Directing this piece has been both a challenge and an honor – an opportunity to explore these truths alongside a generation of young artists who are learning to use their voices with purpose.

It was a joy and a privilege to direct this production. I hope you are moved, inspired, and reminded – through these young voices – why West Side Story continues to matter.

Tonight, tonight-you will be taken on a journey. I hope that journey makes you think, grow, and what is at the cornerstone of this story, love.
